The Chicago Match Cup was an amazing event! It was no surprise to us as we have had a strong relationship with the Chicago Match Race Centre since its formation. Unfortunately for us as the event itself turned it on and we could not.
Throughout the event we were sailing reasonable well and it genuinely felt like we were building towards a good result. However as we reached the quarter final stage (qualifying 5th) we were left unpicked by the higher ranked teams, leaving us to sail summer time local and CMRC head coach Taylor Canfield (qualified 4th).
We were confident going into the match as we have raced Taylor a lot but this was to not be our day. Taylor's many hours sailing these boats showed as we managed to be leading every race but then give Taylor half a chance and he did very well to capitalize. This was very frustrating for us as were normally feel very comfortable also in the TOM 28 designed yachts but at important times we simply could not match his speed. We ended up losing the series 3-1 with every finish coming down to the wire.
This left us placing 6th overall our worst result this year. Afterwards we sat down over a few cheeky cold ones and had a good debrief. We will take a lot from this result as our next event is in a very similar 4 person boat and we need a strong showing. So next stop St Moritz Match Race!
